Aquatint of the mutiny on the Bounty by Robert Dodd (Public domain)
The Bounty, under the command of Lt William Bligh, set out on an expedition to Tahiti in 1787 to collect breadfruit to transport to the West Indies. After a five-month stay in Tahiti, they set sail with a cargo of breadfruit, but the crew were ill prepared for the return to shipboard conditions and discipline. After 23 days at sea, the master's mate Lt Fletcher Christian and his followers woke Bligh in the middle of the night, pointed a bayonet at him and forced him on deck.
1. Apart from Bligh and Christian, there were 42 men onboard. How many joined the mutiny?
2. Bligh and those loyal to him were forced into the Bounty's open boat, with a few supplies and some navigation equipment. After a brief stop at the island of Tofua to replenish their supplies, Bligh and his men made a voyage of...what distance?
3. How many of the mutineers were hanged for their part in the mutiny on the Bounty?
