    During the 17th and 18th centuries, duels were mostly single combats fought with swords or pistols. Duelling was based on a code of honour; they were fought not to kill the opponent but to gain "satisfaction", i.e. to restore one's honour by demonstrating a willingness to risk one's life for it.
